I have no idea why people are so obsessed with 10 bits even with 720p resolution. If they are so quality conscious, shouldn’t they be upgrading their monitors to FHD or 4K instead of this 10 bit BS ?

even I wonder just by concept some feel its great
when I feel its a non sense thing at the moment
8bit or 10bits all are to be viewed on a 8bit system or screen or equipment hence no use wasting so much processing power and time.
You ll need some specific hardware to actually view the 10bit in 10bit.
secondly 99.9%sources are 8bit apart from some benefit none are achieved to the extent that you ll waste resources.
If not to the fullest atm but within a year or 2, HEVC will become the norm and x264 will be completely obsolete as far as re encodes go ( source rips might take longer as the rules arent often changed that quickly 😉 )

The stupidity at the tech awareness of the masses is breathtaking.
The learning impaired don’t have a slightest of clue what 10bit means, what it does and what it needs to do it’s thing but see the comments section on any boards or private tracker, 80% of the commentators would be crying “waiting for 10bit”
Now you know why Android (where you’re not admin of your device) is the most successful OS
When I was interviewer on What.cd, 90% of time I encountered the dimwits who thought 320 > V0 though they didn’t have slightest of idea what CBR/VBR is and how it works but because 320 > ~245 = Better. In the beginning I tried educating a few but very soon I realized it’s a futile exercise.
Here however, the blame rests solely on the shoulders of encoders. 90% of those who are encoding x265 are doing 10 bits. I look for lot’s of older titles I missed when I was in prison but Alas! they’re all 10 Bits. Just a handful of the people are doing 8 bits. I’m “safely” assuming these handful of the people know their stuff unlike those 10 bit encoders.
The difference of the resource usage between 8 bits and 10 bits is the same that is between x264 and x265 (8 bits) so basically, in layman terms for the resource usage you can say:
x264 < x265 < x266 (x265 10 bits)
Read the line and the first reaction is Hay! now it looks just idiotic.
All I can say, God bless those 10 Bit encoders.
Well as it is TBH most of the people who visit us here are movie lovers first as long as the format supports their hardware I am fine with that and that’s my priority TBH
Whatever is happening outside i am least bothered. Yes I have pushed the 1080p lovers to x265 coz there lies a huge and genuine advantage and I am happy that they have moved to that and are pretty happy with it ( at lest that’s what the poll shows 😉 )
anyways the encoding codecs are more of less stable here and I don’t see any change happening anytime sooner
I don’t wish to bring the P thing again that you mentioned, so you may post the titles that you have missed and i ll see over a period of time what I can do.
